Public Statement – PIPA (Professional Inflatable Play Association)
Everyone at PIPA is deeply saddened to learn of the recent tragic incident in Montreal involving an inflatable structure. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends, and all those affected.
While we are not commenting on the specific circumstances of this incident, it is a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to established safety standards when operating inflatable equipment.
In the UK, strict safety guidance is in place to help protect users. This includes the requirement that all inflatables must be correctly and securely anchored at all times during use. Proper anchorage is essential to prevent movement, instability, or the risk of an inflatable becoming airborne.
Additionally, it is widely recognised within the industry that inflatables must not be used in unsafe weather conditions. In particular, inflatables should never be operated in winds — including gusts — exceeding 24mph. Wind conditions can change rapidly, and continuous monitoring is critical to maintaining a safe environment.
Incidents of this nature reinforce the importance of vigilance, training, and compliance with safety standards across the industry.
PIPA remains committed to promoting best practice, raising awareness, and supporting operators, event organisers, and the public in understanding how to use inflatable equipment safely. We will continue our work to encourage adherence to recognised safety standards and to help prevent tragedies such as this from occurring in the future.
Our thoughts remain with all those affected at this difficult time.
